Not authentic does NOT EXIST. Everything we do we do for a more or less justified "authentic" reason/desire.

I don't know. Of all types 4s are most obsessed about being authentic but they actually aren't. they create an idealized version of themselves in their mind and then present it to the world. They talk about authenticity but they are the type of people who spends an hour in front of the mirror in order to decide which clothing and which combination of colors looks most natural, casual and authentic. But there's nothing really spontaneous or authentic about it; they just feel that it reflects their inner "true self" most, but it's not really their "true self", it's just an artificially constructed mentally self-image. Trust me, I'm a 4 myself. ;)

So you think all fours act exactly like you do?

No, I think that fours act like fours. Just read any type description that's a little more in-depth and nuanced and you will find "artificial authenticity", "the desire to be original" etc. Richard Rohr calls it "studied casualness". Get a clue.

"idealized self-image" or "fantasy self" (as Russ Hudson and Don Riso call it) is also part of any in-depth description of type 4. "authenticty" is called the temptation of the 4 and a trap by Richard Rohr. because 4s think they are being authentic by being different from anyone else, which is one their core desries and vices. Being different, special, original.

Of course, healthy 4s are authentic because they are self-revealing and more spontaneous in their self-expression and less artificial. But healthy types are more authentic than less healthy types in general. All types have something they hide or hold back on unhealthy levels. 3s are probably least authentic, but so can be unhealthy 6s who overcompensate and act tough, 8s hide their emotional and vulnerable side, 7s are inauthentic because they run away from negativity, 1s hide everything that's wrong and less than perfect about themselves, 2s lie about their emotional neediness and their needs in general, 5s are inauthentic in that they hold back and keep their inner lives to themselves, and 4s are inauthentic because they only present their aestheticised, carefully crafted fansaty-self to the world and don't express their emotions freely and spontaneously.

With growth and health, all types go towards more authenticity

Finally, someone actually gets what the 4 is all about. Good post!

People seem to forget that at the end of the day, 4 is still an image type and the image they build is that they are different from most. Though, for some silly reason, image building is considered "inauthentic" when it certainly can be authentic. 4's will build an image around themselves with their OWN ideals and based on their OWN feelings. It all comes from a within, unlike the 2 who validates their image by how much love they receive and 3 who validates their image by what looks successful and how much they've achieved.

I think it's fair to say that 4s are most concerned with authenticity. Whether or not they actually are authentic depends on their level of health.

unhealthy fours can be almost laughably stilted and artificial.
